Nurturing a goal to shed light on the silent epidemic of hearing loss, Poulsbo resident Kimberly Parker performs her story from deafness to sound on Friday, January 23rd, 2015, 7:30 p.m. at Seattle’s Town Hall.
Lost in Sound: A One Woman Play written by the actress, is based on her personal experiences growing up with undetected progressive hearing loss which led to deafness. Later, after receiving a cochlear implant and learning how to hear electronically, her life of frustration and isolation transformed to one of joy and inclusion. The one-act play is full of humor, loss, challenges, determination, and hope.
Parker is a graduate of the Peer Mentoring program at Gallaudet University, Washington, D.C.’s well-known school for the deaf and hard of hearing. Her play incorporates research and facts gleaned from this two-year program which focused on mentoring to those with hearing loss. In addition to being entertaining, it contains insights beneficial for anyone facing similar challenges as well as for their family and friends.
Of her play, Parker says, “Lost in Sound is a story that brings new awareness to the invisible condition that is hearing loss, while offering hope. It is a mix of narrative, monologues, and vignettes, interwoven with original musical solos. Often times funny, other times sad, it is informative, thought provoking and inspirational. It is a story that was ‘begging’ to be told…a story that you will be thinking about and talking about long after the show is over.”
